For many of the occasions you cater, you will need to arrange for dish and equipment rentals.  Most cities and towns have several party-rentals companies.  Call around and then visit those you feel are best equipped and pleasant.

Choosing a rental company

It’s a good idea to establish a business connection with one or possibly two companies. Here are some points to consider in choosing which company to use.

  • It should have a large stock, a wide range of prices, and a tasteful style of dishes, glasses, cutlery and accessories.  The stock should be in good condition.
  • A reliable and prompt delivery-and-pickup service with seven-day-a-week availability is essential.  Many parties are on Saturday and Sunday and I’ve occasionally arrived at the client’s house to find the champagne glasses or coffee cups have not been delivered.  You need to be able to call and have these sent immediately by taxi.
  • Look at other equipment such as tables, tablecloths, chairs, large coffee-makers, and portable ovens.  At least one rental company with whom you deal should be able to supply more major equipment such as tents and dance floors.
  • Will they offer a discount on all jobs billed to your company?
  • Are they pleasant and not too pushy?  Rental companies will often have numerous direct contacts with your client.  It is important that they reflect your image as a caterer.

Advantages of renting

For the caterer and the client, renting is easier.  Convey some of these advantages to the client:

  • By renting, you know exactly how many dishes and glasses there are;  there’s no need to rummage through drawers for three more forks.
  • Hours of dishwashing time are saved because all dishes and glasses are packed dirty (to be cleaned by the rental company).  There’s also less chance of running out of glasses;  no one has to take time to wash them while people wait for their drinks.
  • There’s no fear of loss or breakage of family heirlooms.
  • Place settings match.
