Food Packaging Laws

By January 12, 2021 No Comments

Food laws and regulations also govern packaging and if you intend to prepare and sell packaged food you will have to ensure that you comply with the law.

Packaging

Cakes, confectionery, biscuits
  • Cardboard base and side collar
  • Window bag/glad wrap
  • Use sellotape to seal
Sweet and Savoury Pies
  • Foil containers
Sweet and Savoury Puddings
  • Foil Basins
Preserves
  • Jars (standard size, sterilised)
  • Tops (new to give a proper seal)
Freezer Food
  • Foil containers (small for single portions and large for party catering)
  • Polythene bags

Note:

  • A window bag is a much better method of showing off the cake than a cake box, which can also be very expensive.
  • Staples should never be used to close bags as these are dangerous for children and the elderly.  Use a little sellotape to seal.
  • Seal small items as tightly as possible to prevent damage.
  • A piece of cardboard in the base of the bag will help to protect the food and stop grease spots from appearing on the paperback of the bag.
  • Use foil containers as they are easier to handle and store. Foil containers can be put straight into the oven to re-heat (not microwave)
