We can help your dream come true – live the lifestyle you want!

So, you want to start and grow your own hospitality business.  Congratulations!  But during these uncertain times, you are not sure what type of food business to start?

A La Carte Training gives you below a few ideas from home cooking, small scale catering business, restaurant, cafe or coffee shop…

Home Cooking

There are many advantages from home cooking:  it reduces costs;  it enables easy involvement with the family; it provides part-time work.  All of these are important points indicating that a home base may be the most practical way to operate in the initial stages.

It is essential that before embarking on your home cooking business, you find out whether or not you are permitted to run a food business from your home.  Different local government authorities have different regulations, so seek the advice of your local Council and apply and receive approval, prior to starting up your business from home.

Some of the ways to start cooking for money are baking for market stalls, confectionery, celebration cake service, bar and hotel food, lunch boxes and picnics, making preserves for sale, cooking for dinner parties and running a freezer service.  We’ll have a look at some of these below.

Baking for market stalls

You can sell your products to someone already established with a market stall and when you have gained some experience start-up your own market stall.

Cakes for every occasion

There are many, many occasions which can be celebrated with a special cake, and the scope for the cake decorator is enormous.  There are birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, christenings, Easter and Christmas, to state the obvious ones.

Lunch boxes and picnics

Depending upon the area in which you live, a lunch box and picnic service could be built into a profitable business.  If you do not want to do too much work at first, this sort of service will be a good way to start catering as you do not need to invest much money in new equipment or in packaging.

Make preserves for sale

Homemade preserves are always popular and many good cooks are maximising their skills in this area.  For more information why not email alacaretetraining@me.com and request a FREE copy of ‘Make Preserves for Sale’.

Cooking for dinner parties

You can start cooking for dinner parties straight away.  You do not necessarily need to invest much money and provided that you are confident in your cooking ability you can just put a card in the local shops’ window or notice board in a shopping center.

Running a freezer service

Freezer cooking is becoming something of a growth industry.  The idea is simply to fill up someone’s deep freeze with a wide variety of homemade dishes (perhaps a month’s supply of things like cakes, puddings, pies, flans, casseroles and soups) thus relieving the customer of the double chore of shopping and cooking/baking.

Sometimes the customers are busy professional people who have neither the time nor the inclination to cook for themselves but don’t want to exist on shop-bought convenience foods.  Sometimes they are people who do a lot of entertaining and prefer to pay for the privilege of being able to take gourmet dishes out of their own deep freeze rather than attempt to do the cooking themselves or employ a caterer.  Very often they are old or incapacitated people, who simply are not able to do their own cooking, and sometimes their family or friends organise the filling of their freezer to give them a modicum of independence.  For more information why not email alacartetraining@me.com and request a FREE copy of ‘Running a Freezer Service’.

Small Scale Catering Service

Owning your own small scale catering business and working for yourself can be a rewarding experience, provided the proper research and planning has been carried out.

The key to a successful catering business is actually a combination of many important components.  In addition to basic business skills and a strong culinary background, caterers must have a keen desire to please the people they serve and the organisational ability to master the complexities of the business.

Restaurant, cafe, coffee shop…

Do you dream of having your own restaurant, café or coffee shop?  But need to understand essential hospitality and business management skills to establish and operate a food outlet?

NOTE:

Experts claim that the major cause of failure for new operators is not knowing what is really involved.

Restaurants may seem to offer glamour and excitement to some would-be operators;  after all, the job is concerned with good food, a good atmosphere and the chance to meet interesting new people and some successful owners may even become local celebrities.

Reality is very different, involving long hours and dedicated hard work.  The most important thing you should do before you start your hospitality business is to make sure you gain as much knowledge as possible so that you are well prepared.
