Question:

What is the best restaurant in the world?

Answer:

The best restaurant in the world for 2022 has been announced at a live ceremony in London by none other than Stanley Tucci.

Hospitality professionals from across the globe gathered together to countdown the World’s 50 Best Restaurants for the year.

Copenhagen’s Geranium, led by Chef Rasmus Kofoed, secured the no.1 position after ranking no.2 behind Nomad last year, which has now moved into the Best of the Best category.

“Rasmus Kofoed, Søren Ledet, and their team have created an unforgettable dining experience, taking seasonal cooking to superlative heights and delivering precise, beautiful, and elegant food that combines art and flavour alongside a ground-breaking drinks program,” says William Drew, director of content for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Central from Lima is no.2 on the list followed by Disfrutar in Barcelona at no.3, Diverxo in Madrid at no.4, and Pujol in Mexico City at no.5.

There are no Australian restaurants in the top 50, with Andrew McConnell’s Gimlet representing the country in the extended 51-100 list at no.84.

The top 50 list sees restaurants from 24 territories and a total of 12 new additions including Alchemist in Copenhagen, The Jane from Antwerp, and St Hubertus in San Cassiano.

Central is the Best Restaurant in South America, with Pujol taking out the award for the Best Restaurant in North America, Fyn securing the Best Restaurant in Africa award and Tokyo’s Den taking out the Best Restaurant in Asia title.

Senigallia’s Ullassl came in at no.12 on the list, making it the highest new entry in the top 50, while Berlin’s Nobelhart & Schmutzig was the Highest Climber, jumping 28 places.

The Art of Hospitality award was secured by Atomix in New York and the Chef’s Choice award was taken out by Jorge Vallejo from Quintonil in Mexico City.

Coda’s Rene Frank secured The World’s Best Pastry Chef award, with Aponiente in El Puerto de Santa Maria winning the Sustainable Restaurant award.

The 2022 program has also seen the introduction of a new award, the World’s Best Sommelier, which was awarded to Josep Roca from El Celler de Can Roca, Girona, Spain.

“It is … very exciting to recognise this diverse list of restaurants spread across five continents and to see this vibrant culinary community coming together to celebrate in London,” says Drew.

The top 50 was decided upon by a panel of 1,080 restaurant experts from 27 regions, which each have a voting group of 40 members.
