RECIPE FOR SUCCESS INGREDIENT CARDS
Ingredient 2: Marketing
Question:
What is public relations/publicity?
Answer:
Public relations/publicity involve activities such as:
-
- Word of mouth communications between customers.
- Sponsorship of various groups.
- Press releases containing information about business activity and policies on issues, such as the environment, consumer protection and so on.
- Hosting of special events (restaurant opening)
- Newsletters.
Anything, in fact, that puts you and/or your business in the public eye.
Example:
Finding a unique angle for your coffee shop.
Send a press release about your coffee shop to your local newspaper and radio station; this is a great way to get free publicity. However, you may have to think up an unusual, interesting, even unique angle to get people in your community interested, for example, you are using your great-grandmother’s 100-year old recipe for the most delicious caramel apple pie.
Whatever you do, make your story clear and interesting enough to attract the attention of potential customers.
Establishing a favourable image with the general public constitutes good public relations. Every time the public comes in contact with your business face-to-face, by telephone, or in writing, you should use that opportunity to impress your customers.
