You should understand that customer service is about selling. A positive attitude will help your waitstaff to provide good customer service.
There are four types of selling to your customers:
Passive Selling
Passive selling is creating an awareness of your available services. For example, explaining your establishment’s services and supplies you can offer. This helps people remember what services your restaurant can provide. You are not actually taking cash in passive selling. Rather, you are explaining what services the customer might wish to purchase later.
Suggestive Selling
Suggestive selling occurs when you explain the features of your products and suggest that the customer might like to try them. For example, you might tell customers about this week’s entertainment in the club’s auditorium or about the specialties on the restaurant menu. Suggestive selling encourages people to try your services based on your expert suggestions.
Direct Selling
Direct selling involves explaining the benefits of your establishment’s services. For example, you might have special offers such as a discount weekend rate, a limited offer, a two-for-one deal with the convenience of being close to transport. Direct selling involves explaining the benefits of what you have to offer and how the customer will benefit from the purchase of the service.
Up-Selling
Upselling encourages customers to purchase additional items thereby increasing your overall sales. For example, the restaurant waiter suggests extras such as herb or garlic bread, side salads and liqueurs with coffee. Upselling is about adding value to your customer’s purchases with additional purchases.
Before the waitstaff can sell, he/she must know the products and services your establishment sells. Product knowledge is essential for customer sales and it makes your waitstaff look professional.
