Why staff training is important

By now you have spent a lot of time and effort in finding the right person for your food business.

Having selected the right person for the job, introduced them to your business it is now time to provide any additional training they may need in order to maximise their functionality within the business.

It is essential, for the success and the safe running of your business, that your staff all know why and how a job has to be done.  Good training helps them to give quality service and to reduce the number of accidents in the workplace.

It is also necessary that you help them develop their potential and improve their skills.  If they can do their jobs well they will have greater job satisfaction.

When you find someone you think is a suitable employee you should arrange to train them on the job.  This can be done by yourself or, if you have a particularly competent employee, he or she can do it for you.  In-house training ensures that your standards are instilled from the beginning and you can judge how well your new employee works.

Do consider the following when training your staff:

    • put the employee at ease so that they feel comfortable with you
    • ask what they already know about the job
    • give them an explanation, a demonstration and practise with each task
    • before you move onto the next step, make sure that what you have shown the staff member has been understood – if not – show them again
    • ask your employee to try to do the task themselves.  Again, if they are having problems with it, repeat your demonstration slowly
    • encourage them to ask questions if they are not sure about anything
    • be prepared to answer questions accurately and, if you don’t know all the answers admit it and promise to find out  Try to anticipate the sort of questions you may be asked so that you will have your answers ready
    • never ask an employee to do something that you wouldn’t do yourself
    • treat each employee as an individual

It is a good idea to send members of staff to a local college for basic health and safety training.  This will give them useful knowledge about hygiene and safe handling of food.  They will also be awarded a certificate, which will instil in them the sense of pride and achievement.
